AI is about to change how government buys

Every road repair, school laptop, fire truck and water main starts as a public purchase. Behind each one is a procurement team, often small and overloaded, doing careful work under strict rules. Now AI is arriving on both sides of the table: suppliers are using it to produce more bids and proposals than ever, and public buyers need AI of their own to keep up.

We want the people who make sure that change goes well for the public.

SmartDocs is the AI platform that gives public procurement teams superpowers. Our newest product, PublicBuyer.AI (publicbuyer.ai), is a set of AI agents built specifically for public buyers: agents that draft, research, check compliance and answer questions grounded in each jurisdiction's own laws and policies.

We build AI that public servants can trust, on rules we don't bend:
  • Our agents never score bids. People make award decisions.
  • Nothing is published without a named person's approval.
  • Every answer cites the law, code or policy it comes from.

We're forming a small founding cohort of GovTech Fellows who care about government working well and want to help shape how AI shows up in public service.

What you'll do
  • Put AI in front of public buyers. Talk with procurement directors and finance leaders at cities, counties, states, utilities and transit agencies, learn their challenges, and show them what AI agents can do for their teams.
  • Help make the AI better. Test our agents against real procurement scenarios, spot where answers fall short, and give feedback our AI engineers act on. You'll be the public servant's voice inside an AI company.
  • Join live demos as the person in the room who understands how government actually buys.
  • Research and publish. Dig into how specific jurisdictions purchase, from thresholds and policies to council approvals, and turn it into guides that feed both our content and our agents' knowledge.
  • Travel to meet people in person at procurement conferences, professional association chapter meetings and customer sites.
  • Grow into implementation. As your skills build, help agencies roll out SmartDocs: configure workflows, train their staff and see real results.
  • Use AI every day. You'll work with frontier AI tools for research, writing and analysis, and become fluent in a skill every public organization will soon need.
  • Ship a capstone project that's published with your name on it.

Who you are
  • A recent graduate (bachelor's or master's) in public administration, public policy, public affairs, political science, supply chain, economics or a related field
  • Genuinely interested in how government works: an internship in a city or county office, student government, AmeriCorps, a thesis on public operations, or a story about a government process you'd love to fix
  • Curious about AI and excited to learn it hands-on; no technical background required
  • A clear writer and a confident, warm communicator who's comfortable picking up the phone and talking with public officials
  • Organized and self-directed on a remote, fast-moving team

You don't need to know procurement or AI yet. We'll teach you both.

  • A place in a small founding cohort at the intersection of AI and public service
  • A focused two-week onboarding on public procurement, our platform and AI tools, then real work from week three

How to apply

We want to hear from you, not just read about you. Please send:
  1. Your résumé
  2. A 3–5 minute video (a phone recording is perfect; share it as a link) telling us why you care about government working well, and how you think AI could help or hurt
  3. Short written answers (150–250 words each) to two questions:
  • Tell us about a time you saw government work badly, or well. What would you change, or keep?
  • Pick a city or county you know. How does it buy things? Look it up, and feel free to use AI tools; we want to see how you research and how you check what you find.

We're reviewing applications as they arrive. Finalists complete a short paid exercise and a conversation with our team.
